Team-Building 101

By Meghan Johnson Muniz

If there’s one thing you know about events, it’s that as hard as you may try, you can’t please everyone. Even the most perfect event ever will have an attendee who mentions that it was too hot, cold, wet, dry, windy, rainy, etc. However, there are some important considerations to make note of when creating a program and investing in a team-building excursion.

  • Is there a stated purpose to the team-building (e.g., increasing communication, reinforcing corporate values, mission or vision or just having fun)?

  • What type of team-building? It could be mental, physical or both. Depending on the demographic of your group, it may be more beneficial to have them sit in a classroom solving puzzles versus camping overnight on an isolated island.

  • What are the demographics of your group (e.g., average age, job description, nationalities, etc.)?

  • Would you be interested in incorporating corporate social responsibility into your teambuilding activity?

  • Is there a theme to the teambuilding or overall theme to your event you’d like to incorporate?

  • Would you like the group to be indoors or outdoors. This is important to consider for that group in Arizona in July! On-property or off?

  • What is your budget for this teambuilding event?

  • Are you willing and/or interested to do something where attendees have to sign a liability waiver?

  • Do you want prizes budgeted for and given away to the winning team, or should the prize be what they create?

  • How much time are you allocating for team-building?

  • Are you interested in a competitive team-building activity, where the group is split into sections and one or multiple groups win?

Really, if you know anything about events in general, it’s that there’s only a certain amount of perfect in each one. You’ll undoubtedly have a guest that doesn’t want to swim in Pool Olympics or doesn’t like chili for your big, festive Chili Cook-Off Competition. Our advice is to ask these questions up front, so you can at least give yourself the opportunity to coordinate a fun and safe team-building exercise sure to please the masses.
