Besides the obvious benefits of fragrant aroma and soothing color, flowers can enhance an event by exploring the creative and unique attributes this natural product Mother Nature provided for us.

Ideas

In my opinion, floral can extend to other “out of the box” elements like pinecones seen here creatively covering the surfaces of these columns, allowing texture and great lighting possibilities. When strategically and specifically placed floral can mimic logos and branding, and then there is the advantage of a printed element pretending to be real as seen here with this backdrop.

Layers of printed aspen trees enhance this stage presentation to form a background for the approaching panel discussion.  Lighting, once again gives this element a wow effect.

Tips

Know the budget upfront, as a florist will be able to lead you in a direction that will ultimately benefit your event. Flowers can be as common as Ford automobiles or as exotic as Porsches with prices that correspond. Tell your florist what is important to your event such as size of arrangement, color, shape, etc., and they will be able to pick out flowers to make your wishes come true.

Other tricks of the trade that can be helpful are using fewer, larger elements or more greenery and less actual floral blooms to keep on budget.

*Editor’s Note: Watch for the upcoming Flower Power feature story in the Winter 2015 issue of Colorado Meetings + Events.

Mike Roffino, co-founder of DesignWorks, studied Fine Art at Colorado State University and spent more than 10 years in the field before starting DesignWorks. At that time, Mike and Dave Squires agreed they would work one event per week. The company is now one of Denver's premier event decor agencies with up to nine or 10 events happening in one day.

Retreats and off-site meetings present wonderful opportunities for groups to collaborate, strategize and build relationships away from their normal office environments. With proper planning, these sessions can be highly effective and even pivotal in setting a new direction. However, off-sites may present some unforeseen challenges that can quickly deflate the energy in the room if not anticipated and addressed in advance.

No matter the scope or size of an event, it’s best to have some sort of common thread that ties everything together. This can be accomplished using décor, lighting, food, floral and even music.

It’s when you don’t have a cohesive look that the attendee experience can feel disjointed and not provide the outcomes you set out to achieve.
