What happens to magazine editors when their publication folds? If you’re Ian Knauer and Shelley Wiseman, you buy the farm— so to speak. Knauer and Wiseman, two former colleagues at Gourmet magazine, have teamed up to offer cooking lessons and unique events at Tullamore Farms, a working cattle and lamb farm in Stockton. The scenic drive along Route 29 to the Farm Cooking School’s classic country kitchen (complete with the requisite squeaky screen door) just might have you wondering, “Are we really in New Jersey?”

Step inside to a one-room kitchen/ dining room complete with an oversized wood farm table built by Knauer himself. It’s the perfect place to sit down and enjoy the well-deserved spoils after the cooking class. “Typically we offer a hands-on cooking class that is based on the season,” says Knauer. “In the summer and fall, those classes often include a garden element (guests pick items fresh from the garden). All the classes end in lunch or dinner and we can accommodate 20 to 30 guests, depending on the season—in the summer, we can eat and cook outside and can fit more people.

The menus range, and can be written for the group and other activities like horseback riding, farm tours, apple pressing, etc., can be added on if desired. Knauer and Wiseman might be experts, but their down-to-earth style is far from intimidating. Of course, participation is entirely up to you—you can even skip the class and just sit back and enjoy a perfectly executed meal in a memorable setting.

These retro-style bars bring legit cool to cozy gatherings.

If you’re trying to help your team bond, impress a client or show your colleagues that you’re still cool, hold your next intimate gathering at a secret speakeasy. Some of these establishments have been around since Prohibition and others replicate the illegal bars from the 1920s.
